You may have noticed that we are super passionate about composting here at Sun & Swell. But what makes composting so awesome and why do we think it's so important to keep our packaging out of the landfill?
A few reasons why composting is awesome:
- It keeps things out of the landfill - About 30% of what we throw away could actually be composted! That means 30% of what is sitting in the landfill could be used to fertilize soil and grow more plants.
- It prevents methane release - Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is released from landfills. But the microbes that create methane don't thrive in an oxygenated environment. Since composting needs so much oxygen to help the decomposition process it doesn't release methane.
- It improves soil health - The soil created from composting is extremely nutrient rich so it improves soil health and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.
- It's a closed loop process - The soil created from composting food and yard scraps can be used to grow more food!
