How do I know if my bag is compostable?
If you have a compostable bag, it will have a compostable icon on the front, and it will also say “I’m Compostable” on the back.
What does compostable mean?
Compostability describes material which biodegrades (breaks down) within a time-frame of 180 days under composting conditions - high humidity, high temperature and the presence of microorganisms and bacteria. The packaging can be treated like organic waste and will decompose naturally - just like a banana peel!
How do I dispose a compostable package?
You should think of our packaging like a banana peel. Ideally, you can dispose of it in a compost bin, if you have access to one (see the next question for tips!). However, It’s important to highlight that - just like a banana peel - compostable packaging is not recyclable. If you don’t have access to composting, you should throw our packaging in a normal trash bin.
Where do I find a compost bin?
Some larger cities have industrial compost facilities, but not all do. If your city has compost facilities, you will often find compost bins at local businesses (ie: Starbucks, Whole Foods or Universities). If you need help finding a local compost drop-off location, reach out and we can help you locate one (firstname.lastname@example.org). We are working to establish a partnership with a nationwide partner to help collect compost...stay tuned! You can also explore creating your own home compost - here is a helpful how to guide.
Can I decompose of Sun & Swell packaging in home compost?
Our packaging is guaranteed to break down in an industrial compost facility within 180 days. Our packaging will also decompose in home compost, however, we cannot guarantee a timeline as everyone’s home compost has varying degrees of humidity, heat, and presence of bacteria/microorganisms.
Will compostable packaging decompose in landfill?
Our compostable packaging acts just like a banana peel - and all other organic waste. Organic waste is not intended for landfill. Not only does it take up room, but it also releases methane gas.
Why is Sun & Swell transitioning to compostable packaging?
We care deeply about the impact our product has - on the health of those who consume it and also on the health of our planet. According to UN Environment, only 9% of plastic waste ever generated has been recycled, and about half of the plastic waste in the world comes from plastic packaging. Compostable food packaging is a step away from a single-use economy and a reach towards a circular economy in which all resources are regenerated for a new purpose at the end of each life stage.
How can we help make compostable packaging a better solution?
We are the first to admit that this new packaging is by no means a cure all: not everyone has access to composting and there is still a high level of ambiguity around composting in general. That being said, to us, being a responsible business means opting for the most sustainable option currently available while continuing to pursue more optimized solutions. As more companies and consumers choose compostable packaging, the more the need for compostable infrastructure and accessibility within cities will grow. Similarly, as the momentum towards sustainable packaging continues to build, the more evolved the packaging technologies will become.
Who makes your compostable packaging?
Our partner for compostable packaging is TIPA-Corp, a female-founded company that is committed to creating viable compostable, flexible packaging solutions. We are so thankful for their assistance throughout this transition!
