Conventional vs. Organic Spices: What's the Difference?
If you love food, you most likely love spices. Spices like Cinnamon, Turmeric, etc. give our meals that extra oomph of flavor. Spices aren’t just tasty however, they also add vital nutrients.
Many of us know why we should or do buy organic food. But when it comes to spices, it’s important to understand that it’s equally as important to buy organic spices over conventional ones.
Why? Here are three main reasons:
In order to be sold in the U.S., spices have to be sterilized. This happens through fumigation, irradiation or steaming- but steaming is the only method free from harmful chemicals. Almost all conventional spices are sterilized via harmful chemicals that are banned in places like Europe.
The FDA doesn’t require spices to label any additives, artificial colors, preservatives or added flavors. Organic spices by definition do not include any of these.
They have greater medicinal value. Spices grown in natural conditions (such as organic spices) have greater potency, nutrients and flavor.
Cook spices to get the most benefits out of them
Buy smaller quantities of spices at a time so they remain fresh
Never keep spices longer than 12 months
Buy spices in their whole, raw state and grind yourself when possible
