Probiotics: Why are they Important and How to Find the Best One

When it comes to keeping your body functioning properly, your gut and digestion are essential. There are many important reasons to take probiotics. Disease, infections, skin issues, fatigue, weight gain, and of course digestion issues, all start with an improperly functioning gut. Keeping the gut flora and good bacteria in balance is one of the best ways to prevent these ailments.

Why probiotics are important might be easy to understand, but figuring out where to start is a different story. You can get probiotics from several sources, be it supplements, foods and juices.

Eating probiotic rich foods is helpful and essential. These foods include, but are not limited to:

  • Kimchi

  • Kefir

  • Kombucha

  • Coconut (and regular) yogurt

  • Sauerkraut

  • Miso

However, most people need to take additional supplements to stay in balance, especially when dealing with health issues and illness.

The probiotic and fermented foods and supplements section of your local grocery store is likely bursting with options, and their labels can feel just as overwhelming. With more options than ever, it’s important to understand just what to look for in a probiotic supplement.

Below are some tips for figuring out how to get your most optimal daily dose of probiotics:

  • Take the time to research the strains you need to best treat your ailments, then make sure they are included.

  • They should contain at least 5,000 CFU’s (colony forming units) and over seven strains.

  • Check the expiration date. The bacteria will only be active throughout the shelf life.

Probiotics aren’t regulated by the FDA, so many of the supplements found on shelves actually don’t have the good bacteria they claim to. That’s why it’s important to pick a reputable brand. Some of our favorites are Renew Life and Garden of Life.
